Hover Effect

The hover effect changes an element's appearance when you hover your cursor over it. This effect is achieved using the :hover pseudo-class.

Transition effects in CSS provide a way to control animation speed when changing CSS properties. They allow us to smoothly change values over a specific duration.

Transitions have three main properties you can define:

  • transition-property: This specifies the CSS properties to which the transition effect is applied. For example, if you want the effect to apply to the width of the element, then the property will be 'width.'
  • transition-duration: It denotes the duration over which transitions should occur in seconds.
  • transition-timing-function: This decides the speed curve of the transition effect.

In the example provided, we've used the transition property to gradually change the transform property over a specified duration. This is what creates the animation effect.

When you hover over the div, it triggers the :hover pseudo-class where we have specified a transform property along with a transition property.

The transform property changes the appearance of the element (by rotating it 180 degrees). At the same time, the transition property smoothens this change over a duration of 2 seconds. Without the transition property, the rotation would happen instantly, and it wouldn't give the desired animation effect.

Scaling Up: The `transition` Shorthand Property

Adding each transition property one by one can become verbose. Luckily, CSS provides a shorthand transition property that allows us to specify all three transition properties in a single statement, making the code cleaner and more understandable. This reduces clutter and enhances readability.

Here's how it's constructed:

  • property: the name of the CSS property to be transitioned. For example, if you want to change the width of the element, it will be 'width'.

In this example, we've specified that the transform property will transition over a period of 2 seconds with an ease-in timing function in a single line of code. The result is a smoother rotation effect that takes 2 seconds to complete and starts slowly before speeding up, as specified by the ease-in timing function. Simplicity and convenience at its best.

CSS provides several built-in timing functions you can use for transitions. Here are some of the most popular ones:

  • linear: This function creates a uniform transition.
  • ease: This function starts slowly, then speeds up, and finishes slowly. This is the default value for the CSS transition-timing-function property.
  • ease-in: This function starts slowly, then speeds up until the end of the animation.
  • ease-out: This function starts at normal speed and slows down at the end, which is useful for transitions that blur or fade out.
  • ease-in-out: This function starts slowly, is fastest in the middle of the animation, and finishes slowly.
Applying Transitions to Specific Pseudo-classes

While adding animations to your webpage, you might want certain effects to apply only during specific states of an element. CSS allows us to control this granularity using pseudo-classes. For instance, you can make transitions apply only when the user hovers over an element, leaving other states unaffected.

In CSS, all you have to do is specify the transition property under the specific pseudo-class you are interested in, rather than the default state of the element.

For example, if you want to apply the transition only when hovering over an element, you would specify the transition inside the :hover pseudo-class. If you don't want a transition when the element is clicked, simply don't specify the transition inside the :active pseudo-class.
