Lesson 3
Use the Learning Question
Use the Learning Question

In this unit, we delve into the powerful Learning Question: "What was most useful for you?" This question is designed to encourage reflection, reinforce learning, and enhance your coaching conversations' overall impact. By mastering this question, you can help team members gain deeper insights and take ownership of their growth.

What is the Learning Question?

The Learning Question, "What was most useful for you?", acts as a reflective tool to help coachees identify and articulate key takeaways from a coaching conversation. It prompts them to consider what they have learned and how they can apply this knowledge moving forward. For example, after discussing ways to improve sales pitches, you could ask, "What was most useful for you in our conversation?"

By posing this question, you underscore the importance of reflection and signal that their personal insights are valued, promoting a growth mindset and continuous learning.

Encouraging Reflection

Asking the Learning Question encourages team members to reflect on their experiences and evaluate what has been beneficial. This reflection helps consolidate learning and foster self-awareness. For instance, after a client presentation, you might ask the Learning Question to allow your direct report to pinpoint specific strategies or actions that contributed to their success.

  • Victoria: Now that we've wrapped up discussing your client presentation, what was most useful for you in our conversation?
  • Chris: I think the part about structuring the presentation to highlight client pain points was particularly valuable. I hadn't thought of that approach before.
  • Victoria: That's great to hear. How do you plan to implement that in your next presentation?
  • Chris: I'll start by researching common pain points in their industry and tweaking my slides to address those right at the beginning.

In this dialogue, Victoria uses the Learning Question to help Chris reflect on the discussion, pinpoint a critical takeaway, and consider practical application.

Reinforcing Learning

The Learning Question reinforces key lessons and ensures that insights gained during the conversation are retained and acted upon. When team members articulate what they found most useful, it solidifies their understanding of effective strategies. For instance, after discussing conflict resolution, you could ask, "What would you do differently next time based on this experience?" Their response might reveal a particularly effective technique or a new perspective.

By using the Learning Question, you empower your team to take ownership of their growth and cultivate a habit of continuous improvement. In the upcoming role-play sessions, you will have the opportunity to practice using the Learning Question to foster reflection and reinforce learning effectively.
