Lesson 2
Use the AWE Question
Use the AWE Question

The journey to asking impactful questions continues with mastering the AWE Question: "And what else?" This seemingly simple question can significantly enhance your coaching conversations by encouraging deeper exploration and ensuring all necessary facets are addressed.

What is the AWE Question?

The AWE Question, "And what else?", acts as a powerful follow-up that delves deeper into initial responses. It allows the coachee to uncover additional layers of thought or concern. For example, after mentioning a challenge with a client, you might ask: "That's insightful, and what else?" This prompts them to reveal further issues that may be beneath the surface.

Encourage Deeper Exploration to Find Hidden Issues

The AWE Question shines in uncovering hidden issues that might not be immediately apparent. It invites the coachee to reflect more deeply and consider aspects they might have initially overlooked. For instance, if your coachee talks about struggling with time management, asking "And what else?" might reveal underlying stressors or conflicting priorities. This process illuminates the complete picture, enabling more effective coaching.

  • Chris: Hi Natalie, let's talk about your recent project challenges. What's been bothering you the most?
  • Natalie: Well, I've been having a hard time coordinating with the team.
  • Chris: That's tough. And what else?
  • Natalie: Also, the project deadlines are stressing me out.
  • Chris: I see. And what else?
  • Natalie: Honestly, I'm not sure if I'm fully understanding our overall project goals.

In this dialogue, Chris effectively uses the AWE Question to help Natalie delve deeper into multiple underlying issues, rather than stopping at the first response. This uncovering allows for more thorough and insightful coaching.

Prevent the Conversation from Ending Too Soon

One of the key benefits of the AWE Question is its ability to keep the conversation from ending prematurely. By consistently asking "And what else?", you show the coachee that you are genuinely interested in understanding all facets of their situation. After discussing a primary concern, asking "And what else?" often opens up new areas of discussion that might otherwise remain unexplored. Not only does this enrich the conversation, but it also fosters a thorough and supportive coaching environment.

By integrating the AWE Question into your coaching toolkit, you will create more meaningful and comprehensive dialogues. Up next, you will dive into role-play sessions designed to practice using the AWE Question in a variety of contexts.
