Lesson 5
Adjusting Styles for Better Appearance
Topic Overview and Actualization

Hello there! Previously, we learned HTML and basic CSS. Today's mission is 'Adjusting Styles for Better Appearance'. We're going on a CSS adjustment journey to give a polished touch to our to-do list. Let's dive right in!

Websites or apps catch your eye due to their style. Styling in web development ensures applications are visually appealing and user-friendly. Real-world examples of styled websites might have different colored headers, larger titles, or buttons that change color on hover — all of these are styling adjustments that enhance the user experience.

Aligning Text and Other Elements

Well-aligned elements, like symmetrical objects, are pleasing to our eyes. CSS provides alignment properties, like text-align, which sets horizontal text alignment. Let's align our to-do list to the center:

CSS
1#todo-list { 2 /* Center-aligns text within the to-do list */ 3 text-align: center; 4}
Playing with Colors

Color is another crucial aspect of web design. Consistent color schemes can enhance the user experience. CSS properties color and background-color set text and background colors, respectively.

CSS
1#todo-list { 2 text-align: center; 3 /* Sets the background color to sky blue */ 4 background-color: skyblue; 5 /* Sets the text color to white */ 6 color: white; 7}
Adjusting Font Styles and Sizes

With CSS, we can play around with hundreds of different font styles and sizes and make certain text stand out or align with aesthetic requirements. The properties influencing fonts are font-family (the type of the font), font-size (the size of the font), and font-weight (the thickness of the font).

CSS
1#todo-list { 2 text-align: center; 3 background-color: skyblue; 4 color: white; 5 /* Sets the font type to Arial (default is sans-serif) */ 6 font-family: Arial, sans-serif; 7 /* Sets the font size to 20 pixels */ 8 font-size: 20px; 9 /* Makes the text appear bold */ 10 font-weight: bold; 11}

We used the Arial font, made the text bold, and increased the font size.

Adding Padding for Space Inside Elements

Padding adds space inside an element, creating room between the content and its border. This can make content look less cramped and more readable.

CSS
1#todo-list { 2 text-align: center; 3 background-color: skyblue; 4 color: white; 5 font-family: Arial, sans-serif; 6 font-size: 20px; 7 font-weight: bold; 8 /* Adds 20 pixels of padding on all sides */ 9 padding: 20px; 10}
Adjusting Margins for Space Around Elements

Margins add space around the element, creating separation from other elements. This helps in positioning elements better and avoiding clutter.

CSS
1#todo-list { 2 text-align: center; 3 background-color: skyblue; 4 color: white; 5 font-family: Arial, sans-serif; 6 font-size: 20px; 7 font-weight: bold; 8 padding: 20px; 9 /* Adds 10 pixels of margin on all sides */ 10 margin: 10px; 11}
Adding Borders

Borders define the boundaries of an element, giving it structure. CSS allows customizing the width, style, and color of borders.

CSS
1#todo-list { 2 text-align: center; 3 background-color: skyblue; 4 color: white; 5 font-family: Arial, sans-serif; 6 font-size: 20px; 7 font-weight: bold; 8 padding: 20px; 9 margin: 10px; 10 /* Adds a solid border with 2 pixels thickness and white color */ 11 border: 2px solid white; 12}
Using Border Radius for Rounded Corners

Border radius modifies the corners of an element's border, giving it a rounded effect.

CSS
1#todo-list { 2 text-align: center; 3 background-color: skyblue; 4 color: white; 5 font-family: Arial, sans-serif; 6 font-size: 20px; 7 font-weight: bold; 8 padding: 20px; 9 margin: 10px; 10 border: 2px solid white; 11 /* Rounds the corners of the border with a radius of 10 pixels */ 12 border-radius: 10px; 13}
Controlling Width with max-width

The max-width property limits the maximum width of an element, ensuring it doesn’t become too wide, which can help maintain readability.

CSS
1#todo-list { 2 text-align: center; 3 background-color: skyblue; 4 color: white; 5 font-family: Arial, sans-serif; 6 font-size: 20px; 7 font-weight: bold; 8 padding: 20px; 9 margin: 10px; 10 border: 2px solid white; 11 border-radius: 10px; 12 /* Sets the maximum width to 500 pixels */ 13 max-width: 500px; 14}
Creating Hover Effects

Finally, let's add interactivity using hover effects, which change an element's style when we hover over it. We use the CSS :hover selector for this effect.

CSS
1#todo-list:hover { 2 /* Changes the text color to coral when you hover over the list */ 3 color: coral; 4}
