Lesson 3
Stay Focused on Your Big Rocks
Defining the Big Rocks Concept

The "big rocks" concept emphasizes prioritizing high-impact tasks before addressing less critical ones. The analogy involves imagining you have a jar and a collection of big rocks, pebbles, and sand. The jar represents your time or capacity, and the various materials represent the work tasks or commitments:

  • Put the Big Rocks in first: These symbolize the most important things such as major goals, key projects, or essential responsibilities.
  • Put the Pebbles in next: These represent tasks of medium importance or those things that matter but aren’t critical.
  • Put the Sand in last: This symbolizes the minor tasks or daily distractions that are less important.

Focusing on your big rocks first ensures effective use of your time and capacity for the most critical goals.

Avoid Putting the Sand in First

Guiding your team to focus on high-priority tasks is essential. Encourage them to identify their big rocks and manage their time accordingly. Ask open-ended questions like, "What are your top three priorities for this week?" to help them reflect on their focus areas. This approach prevents them from spending too much time on less critical tasks.

  • Natalie: Hey Chris, I've been overwhelmed lately and feel like I'm always behind on my tasks.
  • Chris: Let's start by identifying your big rocks. What are the most critical tasks you need to focus on this week?
  • Natalie: I think finalizing the project report and preparing for the client meeting are my top priorities.
  • Chris: Great. Let's make sure those tasks are completed first before addressing less critical work. How does that sound?
  • Natalie: That makes sense. I've been getting distracted by all of the smaller, daily tasks.
Avoid Taking on Too Many Big Rocks

When the workload becomes overwhelming, you can go to your leader and propose trading one big rock objective for another. For instance, if you're already handling a major project, say, "I can take on the new initiative, but will need to delegate my current project to another team member." This maintains your focus without overextending yourself, ensuring efficient task management without sacrificing quality.

By adopting these strategies, your team can remain focused on critical tasks, enhancing overall productivity and success. This unit will be complemented by role-play sessions to practice these concepts in real-life scenarios.
